During the spring of 2008, the DEC operations department in Boonville constructed the new kiosk for the Bald (Rondaxe) Mt. trailhead to replace the small trail register that was often bypassed by hikers. The new kiosk was taken apart and reassembled adjacent to the expanded parking lot at the Rondaxe Rd. trailhead in June with a DEC crew led by Old Forge operations manager Mike Schoeberlein. On June 26, 2008 Herkimer District Forester Scott Healy and Mary Kay Allen brought up the Friends of Bald (Rondaxe) Mt. (FoBM) interpretative sign, stored at the Herkimer DEC office for the past two years, to install it in the new kiosk adjacent to the expanded trailhead parking lot on the Rondaxe Rd. The beautiful sign was designed using photos & text submitted by the FoBM to Charles Vandrei, Agency Historic Preservation Officer at the DEC Bureau of Land Mgmt. Office in Albany, NY. The interpretative sign was paid for by donations to the Friends of Bald Mt. Restoration Project. On hand to help with the installation were Co-President of FoBM Barb Ball and Secretary Peg Masters, both from Old Forge.

The FoBM committee continues to work with our local Forest Ranger Chad Richardson on maintenance of the historic fire tower. The cab recently was re-painted to cover up a bit of graffiti and another workday is scheduled for July 10, 2008 to re-stain the platforms and steps, re-seal the map table, and clear away a charred tree on the summit. Hundreds of school children arrived this spring for field trips to the fire tower; over 600 people signed the register in April (with snow still on the trail). That same month, visitors came from all over NYS as well as Florida, California, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Israel, and the United Kingdom. Congratulations to Ron & Melanie from Utica who got ENGAGED on the summit recently! Also, check out the photo below of some very, well-mannered visitors from Clinton, NY . . . . who were on the trail on Mother’s Day.
