Mail-Order Houses in Town of Webb

New Exhibit for Summer 2001

Sears Roebuck Catalog

The Sears Roebuck mass-merchandising, mail-order company was founded in 1886 and quickly became one of the largest such operations in the world. Between the last decade of the nineteenth century and the beg
inning of World War II, its name became synonymous with American retailing. While most people know that Sears sold nearly everything for the home from its mail order catalogue, few realize that it also sold the house as well. They started to offer building supplies and house plans in 1895. Between 1908 and 1940 Sears operated a "Modern Homes" division that supplied building plans, materials and kit houses shipped by rail to all corners of the nation.

The Sears houses in Old Forge were built in the late 1920's and early 1930's during the height of the depression. Quality materials at affordable prices allowed local residents to build their first homes -  while adding to the architectural character of our community. - and many have survived to this day! Contact the Historical for more information on researching your mail-order cottages.

The Aladdin Company of Bay City, Michigan was one of America's most long lived manufacturers of mail-order, "kit homes." The company was started in 1906 by two brothers, Otto and William Sovereign. Aladdin continued as a family-owned firm manufacturing mail-order houses until 1981. Over the Company's long history it sold over 75,000 homes to both individual and corporate customers.

True Story

In 1916 The Austin Motor Company in Birmingham England purchased 200 Aladdin houses. They were loaded on the SS Headley, but were lost when the ship was sunk in the Atlantic by a German submarine. In March 1917 a second shipment of 200 homes was sent from New York -  this time arriving safely in England. These homes - - still stand in Birmingham, narrowly surviving German bombs during World War II.

Today, this isolated island of Midwestern American Aladdin homes are ALL listed on the British Historic Register.
