Wolf Reintroduction
in the Adirondacks |
The opposition's arguments include:
- Wolves will attack humans
- Wolves will attack livestock or
decimate deer herds
- Restoration costs will be enormous
Reintroduction advocates counter:
- There are no documented cases of
a healthy wolf seriously injuring anyone in North America
- Defenders claim wolves feed on
the weak and old deer, thereby culling the herds. They also have set up
a wolf compensation fund to pay fair market value to cattlemen and ranchers
to compensate for livestock losses
- Defenders claim wolves bring economic
benefits to communities, such as Ely, Minnesota, where a wolf education
center draws "literally millions in revenues to this small rural town."
